Thanks to its location, its access to every transport mode and the very short distances involved, Türkiye is becoming a hub for transit movements. In recent years many companies in the supply chain have adapted to changing trade conditions with faster, cheaper solutions — transit transport among them.

For cargo that enters the Turkish customs zone and will be exported onwards — whether a single consignment or several arriving at different times to be consolidated — the question of temporary storage areas and bonded warehouse declarations arises. Bonded warehouses are increasingly preferred today because of their technology and their facilities.

Temporary storage or bonded warehouse — what is the difference?

Temporary storage is where goods brought into the Turkish customs zone but not yet in free circulation are placed after presentation to customs, until they are assigned a customs-approved treatment. These are sheds, depots or hangars at the points where vehicles stop, berth or land, built so that the goods are protected from any external effect or interference.

A bonded warehouse is an open or closed area where goods under customs supervision — or, where permitted, goods in free circulation destined for export — are stored.

According to Ministry of Trade figures, Türkiye has 1,195 bonded warehouses attached to 92 customs directorates in 41 provinces.
