What is a partial (LCL) load?

The method known as LCL (Less than Container Load) — partial container load — allows cargo belonging to different shippers but travelling the same route to move in a single vehicle or container, optimising both cost and space. Such consignments are called groupage cargo, and the method is used widely in domestic and international transport alike.

Types of partial load transport

• Road — the first mode that comes to mind for groupage; distribution follows the planned route and loading can take place at the door or at the warehouse.
• Sea — divided into container and break-bulk shipments, loaded at ports, bonded warehouses, depots or free zones.
• Air — loaded at airports; the preferred option for urgent and high-value goods.
• Rail — well suited to large volumes over long distances.

Advantages of partial loads

• Cost saving — you pay only for the space your cargo occupies.
• Route flexibility — the optimal mode can be chosen for the deadline and the budget.
• Shorter transit — road groupage in particular delivers faster than sea or rail.
• Better use of space — cargo is grouped by product type, packaging and stacking pattern.

Vehicle planning is critical in groupage: the load must be grouped according to the type of goods, the packaging and how it can be stacked. Warehouse planning matters just as much.

Weight and volume drive the calculation. In road groupage the figures are worked out in cubic metres, by weight or with loading-metre systems; the volume formula is width × length × height × number of units = m³.
