Recent History of Restrictions and Embargoes

  1. U.S. and Cuba Embargo (1960s to Present): The embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba since the 1960s began during the Cold War. The U.S. aimed to overthrow the Cuban government and dismantle the communist regime by implementing trade, economic, and diplomatic embargoes.
  2. UN Sanctions on Iraq (1990-2003): Following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in the 1990s, the United Nations imposed comprehensive sanctions on Iraq. These sanctions were used as leverage to compel Iraq to destroy its weapons and end its nuclear program.
  3. Mutual Sanctions Between the EU and Russia (2014-Present): After Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its intervention in the conflict in Ukraine, the European Union and other Western countries imposed economic sanctions on Russia. In retaliation, Russia imposed sanctions on these countries, including restrictions on certain food products.
  4. U.S. and Iran Sanctions (2018-Present): After the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, a comprehensive economic embargo was reintroduced against Iran.

Turkey’s Restrictions on Israel

Diplomatic Tensions and Political Restrictions: Diplomatic tensions and political disagreements between Turkey and Israel can lead to the restriction or suspension of some trade relations. For instance, following the Mavi Marmara incident in 2010, diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel were severely strained, and Turkey imposed various diplomatic restrictions on Israel.

Military and Security Cooperation Restrictions: Turkey may suspend or restrict military and security cooperation with Israel. For example, after the Mavi Marmara incident, Turkey suspended military cooperation with Israel and canceled joint military exercises.

Commercial and Economic Restrictions: Turkey’s restrictions on Israel may include limiting trade and economic relations or restricting the trade of specific products. However, such restrictions are generally not full trade embargoes but rather specific limitations on certain sectors or products.
